A True Bondage Between Jackie and Skippy| An Emotional Horse Poem
By: Lea Ann Hungate
My husband and I had finally gotten our first horse and had decided we wanted to learn to ride better. We went to some small local shows and gymkhanas and finally met a young lady named Jackie. Jackie ended up giving us lessons for a couple of years.
Jackie’s horse Skippy was a beautiful buckskin stud colt, of whom Jackie was very proud. She had bred her older mare to get him and had raised him from birth. She spent hours and hours with Skippy, teaching him his basic ground manners and then moving on to some round pen and lunge line work.
A couple of years after we met Jackie and Skippy, he colicked and was taken into our local equine hospital. The vets there advised that Skippy would need surgery. The surgery went very well, but Skippy was having trouble coming out of the anesthesia. Along with some other friends, we waited with Jackie at the equine hospital overnight. Skippy would try to get up, moving when he heard Jackie’s voice, but was unable to wake up. It was finally decided that Skippy would need to be put down.
The experience was emotional for everyone involved and led me to write the following poem for Jackie a few days later:
“Spirit Walker”
Carry your head high
Spirit Horse.
Twas sad fate that altered
your young life’s course.
Young as you were
and growing strong.
Seems we’d all known you,
our whole lives long.
So swift of feet,
so smart and sweet.
You taught us well,
our four-hooved friend.
Whoever thought our time with you,
would come to such an early end.
A gentle girl you left behind,
whose heart will ache for years.
With thoughts of you, and memories,
Only passing time will slow her tears.
Remember, as you walk among the clouds,
always, all ways you made us proud.
Run mighty, Spirit Walker, run free.
And rest assured you’ll always be,
A fond and happy memory…
Dedicated to the memory of
Too Slick To Skip
Known fondly as “Skippy”
