It’s All About Love And Responsibility| Inspirational Horse Stories

It’s All About Love And Responsibility| A Horse Story

    By: Brittany Gentry

I was nine when I got my first horse.  I knew I was going to love taking care of Star, all the time!  And I did, until the winter came.  Each morning before school and in the evening, I had to go out and feed her.

By the time I was ten, we had moved into town and kept Star about a mile away.  Even so, in the winter, it was still my job, along with my brother, to feed her morning and night.  The problem was, like most kids, we were quite content to think of ourselves first, which led to us forgetting to feed Star until after dark; long after a kid wants to ride a bike clear across town; and go into a dark old barn.  As you can imagine, we tumbled back out of the ’spooky’ barn as soon as possible, with her feed.  We then had to break the frozen water in Star’s tub, and haul icy water in five gallon buckets, fifty yards back to the tub. We did this each night we forgot her, all winter long.

My Horse! My Life!| A Glorious Horse Story

In this horse story the author tells about her bay Shetland, AQHA mare horses and her glorious horse riding career.

My Horse! My Life!| A Glorious Horse Story by Karen L. Waite

Horses are my life. I know that seems like an extreme, overused statement, but in my case, it’s really true.  I remember every stage of my life with respect to what horse or horses were around at the time, and the lessons I learned from those horses.

For example, when I was 7, I got my first pony.  Her name was Candy and she was a little bay Shetland with a heart of gold and a stubborn streak a mile wide.  She was a great pony to start with and we had all kinds of fun together. At least I had fun.  She would probably argue that point.  My father also had an Appaloosa gelding named King Bob.  When I was 9, my parents divorced, and during that same time period, both Candy and King Bob died.  It was my first exposure to how difficult life can be, and I realized just how little control I had over what went on in the world.

When I was 11, my father bought an 11 year-old AQHA mare named Cindy Lea Dexter.  at a local auction barn.  Suddenly, after two extremely difficult years, I had something to look forward to, and I began to regain a sense of my place in the world, at least as it related to horses.  I may not have been able to control what went on at home, but Cindy let me lead her and ride her all over the place.  I’ll never forget the day I learned to canter, and more importantly STOP!  I was on top of the world when I was on top of that horse!

Luckiest Of All- My Horse | A Colic Horse Story

    Rss Feed September 16th, 2008

This is a colic horse story that tells about ailing Good Knighthawk and how his master tried hard to get him recovered and who eventually recovered.

Luckiest Of All- My Horse | A Colic Horse Story

By Gloria ColterMy 17-year-old chestnut Morgan gelding, Good Knighthawk, walked obediently into my horse trailer.  As I tied him, I said, “Little Buddy, this will be the ride for your life.  I just hope we can win this one.”  Only minutes before, my vet had given him an injection for serious colic pain.  Hopefully this would keep him easy until I could get him to the University of Georgia Vet School 40 miles away.

It was almost sundown as I pulled out of our driveway.  My mind went back to five years before, when I had made a similar trip with another favorite Morgan gelding, Foothill Jolly Joker.  He, too, was 17 that year, and after extensive colic surgery, recovered and was still usable for pleasure riding.  Would the Lord bless me again in the same way?  The percentage of horses that recover to full use after this procedure was very small.

Just a month before I had gone on my first short-term mission trip to Ukraine with members of my church.  I had spent my last savings on that trip.  I knew from experience that the surgery would be well over two thousand dollars if the doctors would attempt to save Knighthawk.  Should I risk that much money and possibly lose my horse to boot?
I started praying as I drove.  I said, “Lord, I know that Knighthawk belongs to you and you only loaned him to me.  I thank you for that.  If it is your will for him to die from this illness, please don’t let me spend money that should be used for another mission trip to glorify you.  I will gladly give him back to you.  If it is your will that he get well, please let me know without a doubt that you want me to allow the doctors to do surgery.”
