The Magic Cookie | Miraculous Horse Stories

    By: Ashley Bleas

My name is Ashley and I’m fifteen. When I was six, I suffered a near drowning. One afternoon, I was brought along with my neighbors to go fishing after my mom’s friend had died. While my neighbors were putting a worm on my hook, I had seizure and slipped into the water. When they found me I was unconscious. At the hospital my parents were told that I most likely wasn’t going to survive. I was in a coma and the doctors were unsure about massive brain damage.

A story of a renewed spirit for both a horse and a girl by Becca Clayton

One day I was going to the barn I ride at to see my mean horse, Cheyenne. Cheyenne had bitten me three times the day before and kicked me twice. So I went into her pasture and when she saw me she immediately laid back her ears and snapped at me.

My older sister Brooke, was going into the pasture to get her amazing horse Moe. Brooke would never let me ride Moe and this hurt my feelings terribly. Even though Brooke knew the confidence I once had, was gone due to Cheyenne, she still did not let me ride Moe.

From the moment I woke up that intense summer morning, I was buzzing with excitement. At nine years old, the day that the trailer load of new horses arrived was the highlight of my summer. I had graduated from the second level school horses in my lessons, and one of these horses was to be my new mount for schooling sessions. I watched the trailer rumble up the driveway, feeling my heart race all the while. I was at the doors of the trailer before it even came to a complete stop.

Like many girls, I badgered my parents for a horse. I got my first horse, a pony, when I was in seventh grade. I did everything with “Duke”, the county fair, parades, and trail rides. As I got older and was outgrowing Duke, I started pestering my parents for a full size horse. When I was a freshman in high school they finally gave in and we started looking for a horse.

Life With Cheyenne | A Story Of A Quarter Horse

I’m not sure how many people have been graced with meeting an extraordinary yet odd animal, but I have. She is a plump palomino Quarter Horse named Cheyenne. Even when she is being really bad, she still makes you laugh. She is sooo funny that you can’t really help laughing. When she gives you one of her quizzical looks, laughter bubbles up inside you, and a big smile spreads across your face. When you meet a horse as absurd as Cheyenne, you can’t help but laugh.

“I was taking lesson’s from a women named ” Louise Yount.” She is a nice lady. My mom and her where talking about me and how I needed ot me moved up to a greater level of riding. While they where talking I was leaning up against a stall. When all of a sudden a baby filly comes over and blows in my ear. I turn around and laugh! She was cute. I asked Lou if I could go in and pet her. She said it would be allright. So I did.

After years of pleading with my mother, circling classified ads, and annually attending the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show I finally convinced my mother to buy me my very own Arabian. We already had two horses, a very sweet but slightly crippled mare and an unruly Thoroughbred gelding, both given to us, but I was in love with the proud and beautiful Arabian. I suppose it all stemmed back to Walter Farely’s magical series: The Black Stallion.

I have a story that you might be able to use for the new book called
Chicken Soup For The Horse Lovers Soul. It is about my 7 year old arabian
gelding that had a terrible accident last spring. This is how it goes.
Since I was 2 years old my dream was to ride horses. That dream came
true on my sixth birthday. I took my first lesson and loved it. I have been
riding ever since. I have now been riding for almost 7 years. Last winter I
outgrew my pony I have had for three years.

Teaming Up With Duke | A Story Of An Appendix Quarter Horse

When I first got Duke, he was 16 years old and needed a little extra groceries. I was eight years old at the time and in the third grade. Duke, who was a 16.2 hand, stout Appendix Quarter horse gelding, was a bit massive for my sixty-two pound frame. My mother in an attempt to teach me the value of money, made me take out a loan at the bank and pay for him.

A small trophy sits on a shelf on our living room wall, as trophies go it is rather inauspicious. I have boxes of trophies slowly moldering away in the basement from past years of showing, but this one is special. It is about 2 inches square with a small horse and a pen holder. The plaque says, “To Julie, Love, Heather and Spook.” Next to the trophy is a picture of a cute little blond girl in pigtails holding a large, brown horse by his bridle.

Little Man | A Story Of A Quarter Horse

    Rss Feed November 24th, 2008

    By: Angie Hartman

A dear old friend has come back into my life. He comes in the form of a twenty-five year old bay quarter horse gelding named Little Man. With him came a flood of memories that bring a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.

We met the summer of my twelfth year. Little Man was a three year old that had been loaned to Camp Winiwaca for the summer. When our camp session started, he was in his final days of mending from a broken leg. I was a frustrated city girl with an overwhelming infatuation with horses and the dream of becoming a country veterinarian. It was love at first sight!
