The Courage To Be Content | An Inspiring Horse Story

    By: Brittany Gentry

I had a dream of becoming acknowledged in the horse world. For years, I saved my babysitting money, and the money I earned from doing odd jobs, such as mowing, feeding animals, and watering. Finally, I was able to buy a horse of my own, something of which many kids only dream.. A couple of years later I was able to buy a second horse.

I still spent most of my time dreaming about what I would do when I was able to compete. However, circumstances and finances prevented us from finding a steady trainer and competing. Since, my horses and I were not top of the line, I did not see the point in putting much effort into what I had. Then I realized that I was living in a world of dreams: dreams that would never come true.

It is great to dream; after all, look at what others in history have done by dreaming. Still, dreaming alone does not get it done. A person does not fail if they never try, or do they? Anyone can have grand dreams and schemes, but it takes courage to try your best with what you have, rather than dreaming about what you “could have done” if you had more.

So, having stopped and faced the fact that I would most likely never be a well-known rider, that I would always fall into the “hobby horse” class, I stopped living in a world that did not exist for me. I started to ride again. I began finding contentment in what God had given me.

Now I go out and train my horses for relaxation, for the challenge, for the feeling of accomplishment in doing something new, and the fun of doing it. Instead of being upset because few will ever recognize the work I have put into these horses, I have the memories of the fun times as well as all the lessons I learn along the way. I see now, I do not need more.
