In Canada at the Calgary Stmpede a second horse has died. The horse broke his near fore leg during the race and was put down by a vet. A spokesman for the Calagary Stampede, Doug Fraser, told local press: “He was attended to and examined by a veterinarian and the decision was made to euthanize the animal to avoid further suffering.” The injury did not involve any interference or crash.

Another horse on Sunday (July 5) suffered a heart attack after the completion of the race and collapsed when it returned to the barn. The horse finished the race and even completed the post-race parade without any signs of the heart attack. A spokesman for the Calgary Stampede, called the death “a tragedy.” “To lose an animal, regardless of the circumstances, is always difficult for the participants in the GMC Rangeland Derby, because these horses are treated like family,” he said to local press. “The horse died relatively quickly so there was little the veterinarians could do to save it.”
