Fernando Gutierrez Memorial Cup Polo Finals Results

The Fernando Gutierrez Memorial Cup Finals brought out a big crowd to the San Diego Polo Club to watch the action. The polo action was fast, exciting and at times very physical.

For the big silver trophy and beautiful bronzes the winning team Hanalei Bay was led by Mariano Fassetta with an amazing nine goals. Hanalei Bay Polo started off with the first goal and an early lead which was soon narrowed by team Starmeadow’s father and son Graham Bray (five goals). Jesse Bray, (two goals). Jessica Bailey drove in two more goals during the game. Alvaro Tadeo made three goals to bring Hanalei Bay up to 12 goals to Starmeadow’s nine goals.

The action during the game was fast and consisted of some unbelievable shots, some made while the ball was still well up in the air. A number of times the score was tied. A couple of Hanalei Bay’s goals were made within seconds of the timer ending the chukker making for some tense moments. Just as the time was running out in the sixth chukker Hanalei Bay Polo brought in two more goals to make it unmistakable that they had the best day.

Spectators were treated to a sunny day with a cooling ocean breeze. A full bar and food service made the day complete. The band The Trip played some great music and had people up dancing after all the action on the field. A number of family and friends of Fernando Gutierrez were also on hand to help watch and hand out trophies.

Also present was TROTT to promote their fundraiser to help ex-racehorses find new careers. Their booth was manned by Equine massage therapist Lyssa Ryan. The TROTT event will be after next Sunday’s USPA Rossmore Cup Finals presented by FINE Magazine benefiting Kids Korps USA
