BLM roundup causes the death of 11 horses.

“The BLM initiated gather operations on Saturday, July 10, and gathered 228
excess wild horses. To date, eleven horses have died from complications related
to water starvation/dehydration or subsequent water intoxication. Based on
necropsies of the dead horses by the on-site veterinarian, the BLM has
determined the mortalities were a direct result of a lack of water in the
immediate areas occupied by the horses. One horse was euthanized shortly after
being gathered due to a fractured leg that occurred in the temporary holding
corrals.” BLM Press Release dated July 14, 2010

The BLM press release announced the decision to furnish water to the horses they will continue to gather in the Tuscarora area which encompasses the Owyhee, Rock Creek, and Little Humboldt Herd Management Areas (HMAs) located in northern Elko County , Nev.

Many wild horse advocates have opposed this roundup due to the age of the new foals and the harsh, hot conditions of the area in the summer.

“The BLM is dramatically altering these horses’ day to day routines and the mares and foals are not strong enough to be put in these stressful conditions. These roundups need to be suspended and if they are not, it will result in more needless deaths. These horses belong to the American people, not the BLM.” Madeline Pickens

‘The Horse Boy’ -A New Movie

The Horse boy has just been released after it’s premiere in Kansas City, Missouri. In this film parents and their autistic boy go to Mongolia to explore the horse culture and freedom to have their son grow with the mystic powers of the shaman equestrians of the area.

Reviews of the film have been outstanding, calling it an amazing story, a journey of heart and soul.

Horse2Heart first heard of this film at the EXCA Race world finals from Athena Sharp. Athena is a natural horsemanship instructor at the Big River Ranch in Lexington, MO www.bigriverranchtrailriding.com . She is also certified in the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Assoc. (EAGLA) www.eagla.org .The Big River Ranch is an event center showcasing the traditions of historic Lexington along the Missouri River banks.

Athena told me about the H.O.R.S.E. program (Helping Others Reach Success & Excellence) in her area of Missouri and their work in changing lives. They can be found by checking their website www.horsehelpspeople.org .

“Less than one percent of humans who live in American have ever seen wild horses running free. I have spoken with many of the few who have and each has said the view they made will never be forgotten.”

“Twelve the King is not a novel or a non-fiction study. It is a short memorial based on a wild horse stallion in whose presence I spent nearly fifteen years of my own life. He never had anything put on his back and was given all-access to the ranch he lived on after surviving a brutal capture in Nevada.”

The U.S. House of Representatives On Friday, July 17, 2009 approved a measure to restore basic protections for America’s wild horses and burros.</

The U.S. House of Representatives On Friday, July 17, 2009 approved a measure to restore basic protections for America’s wild horses and burros.

Chris Heyde, Deputy Director of Government and Legal Affairs for the Animal Welfare Institute said “At a time when nearly as many wild horses are in captivity as are on the range – a situation which is unacceptable in terms of both animal welfare and fiscal responsibility – the Animal Welfare Institute welcomes this action, and we are grateful to the bill’s champions and supporters.”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the agency responsible for the animals in question, spent nearly 75 percent of its $36 million budget warehousing horses removed from the range. This important legislation restores protection for the wild horses and keeps them from going to slaughter. The public has shown that they wish to preserve America’s wild horses and to return them to the wilds. In spite of this the BLM is holding more than 30,000 horses in holding areas and had planned on killing them as a cost saving measure.

“The BLM’s wild horse program and policies are broken. The ROAM Act offers an opportunity for the agency to restore its credibility when it comes to managing America’s mustangs,” says Heyde. “We urge the Senate to act swiftly before the BLM takes further actions of detriment to the horses.”
It is important now that the public be heard by contacting their senators by mail, phone or e-mail and encourage them to act now.

To learn more watch an important message by the actor Viggo Mortensen. Save the Wild Horses CLCIK HERE

In Canada at the Calgary Stmpede a second horse has died.

In Canada at the Calgary Stmpede a second horse has died. The horse broke his near fore leg during the race and was put down by a vet. A spokesman for the Calagary Stampede, Doug Fraser, told local press: “He was attended to and examined by a veterinarian and the decision was made to euthanize the animal to avoid further suffering.” The injury did not involve any interference or crash.

Another horse on Sunday (July 5) suffered a heart attack after the completion of the race and collapsed when it returned to the barn. The horse finished the race and even completed the post-race parade without any signs of the heart attack. A spokesman for the Calgary Stampede, called the death “a tragedy.” “To lose an animal, regardless of the circumstances, is always difficult for the participants in the GMC Rangeland Derby, because these horses are treated like family,” he said to local press. “The horse died relatively quickly so there was little the veterinarians could do to save it.”

Women's Horse Industry Association for female horse owners, jockeys, trainers, and track staff formed.

Sports marketing and association management executive Catherine Masters has created the Women’s Horse Industry Association for female horse owners, jockeys, trainers, and track staff. The association is designed to help horse women network and work with one another.

“There are a lot of women who are involved in the sport of horse racing and our mission is to bring them all together under one roof so that they can connect with one another and do more business,” Masters said.
