I had just returned from a horse-buying trip to Oklahoma and Texas finding nothing to please me. I spotted an ad run in a local Southern California horse-trading magazine and made a call to see the horse. Sometimes you can travel a long way only to find what you want is right in your own backyard.
When I first made eye contact with this smart looking dark bay quarter horse, I didn’t know he had plans for me. During my inspection of him, he watched me closely with his steady bright eyes. I was impressed with his gorgeous combination of rock hard muscle and brains. As an Equine Veterinarian, I have worked on thousands of top horses and I recognized this horse was the one for which I had been searching. It could be said that I picked him, but I truly believe he picked me.

On a windy day in mid-August, my 9-year-old son and I stood in amazement with a group of about 8-10 women and one man. We had just spent 3 hours rounding up the first 2 of the 15 “wild” Appaloosas that we would rescue over the next week. Unlike the methods traditionally associated with rounding up “wild” horses, we used no ropes, no whips, no harshness against these animals that had never known the gentle touch of a human.
We first heard about a herd of horses for sale a few weeks prior to this round-up. Because we didn’t know the condition the animals were in, and we all had our own horses to care for, we didn’t realize the urgency of finding homes for these horses until a few of us drove by one day and were horrified by the sight…

The stories of great horses, whether alive or long dead, have always given me help and comfort in powerful ways. At nine years old, reading about the courage of race horses motivated me to pursue a life with horses. At thirty, the message of this horse’s trials, inspired me when I was angry and bitter after my mother’s death. The horse’s name was Cruiser, and he actually lived the life of a real Black Beauty during the reign of Queen Victoria.
The dark bay colt with the black mane and tail was born on the beautiful estate Greywell, owned by Lord Dorchester in southern England. His sire was a champion, and his bloodline led directly to the brilliant race horse Eclipse. It seemed like Cruiser had a bright future ahead of him.

Shamrock’s Lady Luck was a very special horse. You can even say she was my Lady Luck. Shammy, her nickname, came into my life when I was eleven years old. We connected, we bonded, and we “clicked” together. I did not pick her and she did not pick me. I now call it fate that brought us together. We learned together and grew together. We won many titles and blues ribbons together.
I even cried on her shoulder when I needed to. In the show ring we were all business, at the barn we were students eager to learn, but in the stall we were best of friends. I retired from Equitation and she retired with me. I was so very fortunate to be able to take her home with me after our career was over. She played in the field and had a few foals. I remember going out to the barn at any given day and getting on her with just a halter and lead rope for a bridle and my jeans as a saddle.

“I am getting a pony for Christmas!” I screamed as I darted into the kitchen and back into our living room on the last day of school before Christmas vacation.
At our house, Santa often left some item early to remind us that he was checking on us and making sure we were on our best behavior.
My grinning parents and brothers and sisters followed me into the living room where I was dancing around the Christmas tree with a manure fork sporting a big red bow.

In 2001, two days after the tragedy of 9/11, I had to have my dearest equine friend and companion, Banner, put down at the age of 29. My one remaining horse, Prince, was left without his pasture mate and buddy of the past 14 years. To help us both adjust to Banner’s absence, I took on loan a tiny Miniature Horse filly, just a yearling, to share our pasture. The filly lost no time in capturing my heart and completely inserting herself into Prince’s world as well. The loan turned into a full-time commitment and “My Treasure” officially joined our little family this past spring.

Horse crazy all my life, I started out riding borrowed (and often untrained) horses and ponies. It was often painful for me to ride as I was born with Hereditary Benign Multiple Cartilaginons Exostoses, a hereditary bone disorder that causes the bones to form with various sized nodules on them. Those nodules interfere with muscles, ligaments, and tendons much like speed bumps interfere with cars.

He was born on the 15th October 1986. The dam was Nubeena and the Sire Patron Score. It’s amazing how useful that freeze brand can be. He never raced according to the Harness Racing Board.

On April 1, 2002, a little Arabian Mare named Waska came to live at our farm. She was nothing but skin and bones, a grade 2 on the starvation scale. I found an ad at the local feed store for other horses that needed our help at the same barn where Waska came from. I called the wonderful ladies at our barn and we pitched in to buy the rest of the heard. They were all very thin, 150-250 pounds under weight but nothing like Waska.
