The Horse In Trailer | A Horrifying Horse Story
By: Sally Boardman
In May 1993, I was involved in a trailering accident with my horse in my two-horse trailer. One thing after another went wrong with our attempts to free my horse. If one person reading this story learns from my situation, it will be well worth it.
Approximately two miles from home I felt a large tug on my truck. Since my horse had never enjoyed trailering and has been known to kick, I assumed he had kicked out at the back ramp. A car pulled up beside me and suggested I check my horse because he looked stuck. When I pulled over I realized that my horse had gotten his front legs over the chest bar at the front of the trailer. His head was still tied, and his hind legs were hanging over the bar. I should mention that the chest bars in my trailer were about 10 inches deep and only swung forward. Luckily I had a friend with me who stayed with the horse while I went to get help. When I returned, my friend had taken the side pin out of the chest bar, and with the horse’s weight on it, it eventually snapped off.
