When it comes to training horses this tall Hollywood cowboy makes it look so easy.

“The fact that my last name is Cameron and the horse’s name is I’ll Cowboy Up was a sign to me to pursue Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race. I have never had so much fun in my life with a horse as I have at the EXCA Events. With all my experience I think I was born for this event,” says seasoned Horseman Bill Cameron. Born into the horse business, Bill started as a child working alongside his father, premier Hollywood movie horse trainer, Denzel Cameron. Known worldwide and highly respected, Denzel was the man behind many animal actors. For over 25 years his family has resided in Rosamond California preparing and training Liberty Horses and Driving Horses.

Training client Barbara Ferrante of Tehachapi, CA (proud owner of quarter horses, “I’ll Cowboy Up” and “Especially Colonel”) introduced Bill Cameron to Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race Association DVD collection.
Bill went to thinking about it, set up several extreme obstacles at the ranch and introduced the horses to them, “I knew I was hooked!” They entered in the 2008 Equine Affaire’s Pomona California Extreme Cowboy Race and have been off and running ever since.

Bill had this to say about his adventure, “2009 was a great year! We traveled all year to EXCA races. California had many challenging courses and excellent riders. We have really enjoyed the friendships developed with fellow competitors. The competitions made me feel much closer to my horses. I am always surprised over what they will do for me.”

Bill and I’ll Cowboy Up received the highest amount of points, 118.5, on the final night of the World Championship Extreme Cowboy Race Competition in Topeka, Kansas. This moved him into fourth place overall.

For this competition scoring had been changed to use the average of the three nights to determine the overall results. A change to go back to the old system of all riders starting at zero points on the final night will be used in Pomona. To make it this way at other events is under consideration according to Bill Hull CEO f the Extreme Cowboy Race Association.

 Bill said, “I didn’t think I could place overall going into the final round so I just went in and had fun.” He had an amazing ride as you can see in the video.

Watching the Extreme Cowboy Race horses whiz around the timed and judged obstacle course  is amazing. Each well practiced team of horse and rider has a chance of winning. People from all across the nation meet for fierce and friendly competition. The national championship is a triumph of horsemanship and honestly, a stroke of good luck too.

Everyday Horsepeople Mitch and Peggy Brasington told us about their road to the Extreme Cowboy Race championship title, their trainer Daniel Harris and how the horses were raced using fishing line and a bullwhip.

The action of the Extreme Cowboy Race World Championship (EXCA) finals in Topeka Kansas ended with a show of camaraderie. Everyone was invited into the center of the R.R. Domer Livestock Arena to take part in the ceremonies. Contestants from all divisions stood shoulder to shoulder, mingled with the horse trainers, grooms, Judges, extended families, EXCA Members and Horse2Heart.com. At this point they had each ridden five grueling rounds of the extreme race with their best horses. Some had brought and raced more than one horse. The evening go-rounds had lasted well into the early morning hours for days. Truly extreme and that’s what makes a true champion.

During the closing ceremony, Craig Cameron, founder of the race, handed out individual praise and a load of prizes. According to standings the Champions were awarded trophy belt buckles, prize monies, chaps, bridles and halters. One sponsor of the race, Colt Firearms awarded the Professionals and non-Pro divisions a forty-five pistol. The guns were used in the mounted shooting portion of the Race in all divisions.

In the Youth Division of 11 entries, Master Jake Glidwell of Lathrop, MO won the Championship riding his American Paint Horse gelding ‘Jigsaw’. Jake is 15 years old and this was his first year riding at the EXCA race. He previously showed horses and “thinks this is much more fun”. Reserve Champion went to Miss Obbie Schlom who had two entries, one horse and one Mule.

In the Novice Division of 19 entries the prizes were awarded as follows; 4th Bonnie Brown, 3rd Scott Nolan, 2nd Lisa Rehberger and 1st Susan Morris. Champion Susan Morris of Louisiana rode her black American Quarter Horse Stallion ‘Cajun’. The horse was rehabilitated as a colt due to a severe injury. It was not thought he would recover let alone undertake the extreme training to champion a race this difficult.

The placements for the Ride Smart Division (55yrs up) with 9 riders are; 4th Glory Fioramonti, 3rd Gary Stewart, 2nd Francis Jones and 1st James Best. 61 year old Champion ‘Jim’Best rode his AQHA gelding Little Black Skids. Jim tells us that Little Black has a big heart and is always ready to work. Together they travel the west competing in Mounted Shooting Contests.

With 33 competitors in the Non-Professional Division it is the largest. The placement was; 4th Skye Wright, 3rd Corinne Lindquist, 2nd Scott Nowlin, and 1st Tracy Pinson. Champion Tracy Pinson rode her black Tennessee Walking Horse Stallion ‘Skyjacker’s Mountain High’ or Tuff for short. He was bred and raised on Tracy’s farm in Florida. He is a Supreme Versatility Champion competing in halter, driving, western, english, obstacles, jumping, barrels and poles. Tracy got hooked on the Cowboy Races watching it on RFD-TV.

The youth division of the Extreme Cowboy Race is age 17 or under. Call it a cowboy race but the girls are taking the reins and whipping the competition. Riding strong, the California girls are showing their cleverness due to cross discipline training. Not only are they versed in the cowboy obstacles but have strong seat due to dressage and hunt seat schooling.
Youth Division Extreme Cowboy Race leader Obbie Schlom missed a part of the course on her mule Ely the judeges were still kind to her. Second round she was the last rider on her horse Ferocious which she placed 5th on in the first run. Craig Cameron said “She might as well be a carpenter the way she nailed the mounted shooting”. This time she remembers to stop and pick up the horses hoof and then does a swing up mount. A little hesitation on the trailer load but she got it done.

Jake Glidewell goes into the second round of the Youth Division Extreme Cowboy Race in second place with his horse ‘’Jigsaw. He does the mounted shooting with two shots across the horse’s neck. He dismounted with a full quick stop, checks the rear right hoof and does a running vault re-mount from behind. His trailer load was quick and clean.

Carly Bowerman went into the 2nd round of the Youth Division Extreme Cowboy Race in third place with ‘Trinket’,gets her shots off in the mounted shooting, does an excellent job in the side pass and a quick trailer load.

Youth Division Extreme Cowboy Race fourth place Jeremiah Finn from Louisiana, rode ‘Crystal’. During his second run Craig Cameron said he is, “Like a wheel on a downhill roll ” and his mounted shooting is “like he is robbing the noon stage”. Jeremiah Finn had a “whale of a run”, Cameron went on to say.
Joey Visser from Horse Town Norco, California is riding a beautiful tall black and white tobiano Paint horse called Meet My Dust. He does the best mounted shooting in his run for the Youth Division, very fast pace, great run. Joey stands in fifth place. Joey also rides in the non-pro division.

At the close of competition Friday at the Extreme Cowboy World Championship Youth Division, only five points separate the top four finishers. Finals are Sunday!

Direct from the action at the World Championships of the Extreme Cowboy Race Assoc. in Topeka Kansas.

Craig Cameron, Extreme Cowboy Race Originator welcomed Horse2Heart to the first day competition with his famous smile and a hand shake.

Word has spread from California to Florida about the race. In this sport the Pros, amateurs and youth mingle and support each other’s efforts, trials, tribulations and victories equally. Demonstrating the classical integrity of the Cowboy way is evident.

2009’s Youth and young gun division champion rode hard to rock ‘n roll riffs, shot pistols and tackled extreme obstacles to  prove themselves to the Professional cowboys called on to Judge. The EXCA  will be starting Judging seminars in the near future.

 “It’s all about speed and control”, Craig tells us. Not as easy as it sounds. Just watching the race is like auditing a training clinic. People tell Craig, “His narration gives them the tools to be able to join in the competitions”.

When asked about rule changes in the future Craig said, “We are taking member input and tweaking the rules to continue to improve the Extreme Cowboy Association”.

Round two of the Youth Division is now setting up with Obbie Schlom in first place and Jake Glidewell in second. Obbie is from California has been mentored by Bill Cameron from Rosamond, California. Natural Born Riders Jake is from Lathrop Mo this is his first year competition Jake comes from a strong Western Pleasure show background. Jake said, “This is a lot more fun”. In third is Carly Bowerman who also has been mentored by Bill Cameron.
