Out in the wild west of California they are looking for the new John Wayne.
Cowboys flocked to Los Angeles for the filming of a new reality television show. Contestants from as far away as Japan and Australia competed in a multitude of tests after applying for the Project Cowboy competition.
Screen tests aside the men had to show their meddle on a fast horse, couples dancing with spurs on, entertaining a crowded arena of spectators and handling a steer practically all at the same time. The ability to think on your feet as a panel of judges quiz your every move was paramount.
As the many long days of Project Cowboy wore on contestants were eliminated and trying stories unfolded. In true cowboy fashion there would be no excuses or complaining. The strong jaws of these men simply grinned, nodded and stood in support of their competitors. The Duke would have done the same.
Project Cowboy is the brain child of the people that started the Extreme Mustang Makover Challenge where wild American Mustangs are adopted, gentled and shown for auction. It was held at the giant Horse Expo equine industry trade show in Los Angeles. A Project Cowgirl will be held in June at the Horse Expo in Sacramento, California. You can learn more about it by typing horse expo on the Horse2Heart search bar.
Mark Matson won the Project Cowboy. He is from Temecula in Southern California and has a horse carriage business.
His peers agree the big jovial man was a clear leader throughout. In a most remarkable moment at the finals Mark announced the retirement of his prize horse. While still in the saddle he removed the show bridle from the horse’s head, gifted it to an unsuspecting spectator he had witnessed riding earlier in the day and then completed his ride bit less on his beloved mare. The Duke would have stood eye to eye with Mark. I know this because he lived across the street from my Grandparents in Bayshores at one time. He would have liked his style too.

Brian Bausch was next in the standings. Bad luck became serendipity for Brian after his horse became sick on their arrival from Cave Creek, Arizona. Mark learned of this situation and stepped up to help. Through his contacts and both men’s stellar reputations, a horse was loaned to Brian. —–>Not just any horse but a world champion American Quarter Horse selected to represent the most popular breed in the country by the AQHA headquarters. Owner and trainer Robin Bond of Vista, California loaned Jose’s Perfection to Brian. The two had only thirty minutes to quickly learn about each other and start the long competition together. In the final freestyle ride Brian matched Mark by removing the bridle from Jose’s Perfection for the horse’s first ever competitive reining ride. The world’s top horseman witnessed the talented pair and multiple offers to purchase the horse are now in consideration.

Recognizably, Robin Bond is a very talented horsewoman and trainer with extensive experience in jumping, dressage and reining. Demonstrating the true Cowgirl way, she ponied up and helped a fellow horseman down on his luck.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this successful event. We look forward to following it to the premier of the television show in September.

What is Natural andClassical Horsemanship ?

Lisa offers natural and classical horsemanship instruction that incorporates methods through which a rider communicates and bonds with the horse. The main purpose of natural horsemanship riding lessons is to create a relationship of trust, understanding and camaraderie between the horse and rider, so that the horse will respond to its human counterpart in a natural comfortable manner. The instruction begins with an assessment of the levels of horse and rider so a custom lesson plan can be created.

Phase One: The first step primarily covers safety, basic skills, partnership and mental fitness.

Phase Two: This phase takes the handler into the horse’s world, making him study the animal’s body language so as to understand the horse’s thoughts, reactions and needs

Phase Three: The final phase in the natural horsemanship training program helps a rider learn how to use cues of ‘focus and energy’ to communicate and direct movements to the horse.

Call now to schedule an introductory evaluation of horse and rider.

Subscribe to Horse Stories | Horse2Heart Equestrian News by Email
Want to get your Horse experience in showing without the high costs and course time limitations of traditional Horse Shows? The Benchmark Program could be a solution for you. Here is some explaination from Founder Linda Allen’s site about this new Horse Show Rally Venue. Great idea Linda!

Today, we have a new set of circumstances impacting our sport. The absolute necessity of show ring mileage in the development of sale-able horses, together with the growing cost of obtaining that mileage has become a dilemma for American owners and trainers. Developing our own horses, therefore, is a bit of a lost art. The biggest handicap in bringing young horses along is the lack of opportunity to get the youngsters an appropriate, cost effective, introduction to the showing world.

Linda Allen, famed course designer of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, the 1992 World Cup Final (Del Mar), Super Leagues in both Dublin and Rotterdam, three time Nations Cup rider, and judge for many National Medals, has brought numerous horses from “local” shows to International acclaim. The Benchmark Program, a concept developed by Linda Allen, is designed to address this lack of opportunity for appropriate and affordable mileage for young horses as well as for less experienced riders. Linda’s plan is for one-day rallies that emphasize the development of a solid foundation, rather than on winning ribbons.

The Benchmark Program is carefully designed to meet the needs of trainers of young horses, as well as riders who need mileage in the arena. Each one-day rally will feature a course comparable to that at a rated show. These courses will be “horse-friendly” to encourage schooling for young horses. Riders will have the opportunity to ride multiple rounds at whatever height they choose, giving them the opportunity both to ascertain their horses’ current level of training as well as to ensure that every horse has gotten a full measure of good ‘mileage’ during the day’s outing. The Benchmark Program will also offer a permanent performance record for each horse, consisting of scored first rounds at each height. These rounds will accumulate points toward Benchmark Bronze, Silver, and Gold achievement levels, creating increased visibility for young horses and giving trainers and owners an opportunity to showcase horses in a cost-effective way. Additionally, The Benchmark Program offers Junior and Amateur a way to accumulate show-ring mileage and reach individual performance goals.

The Benchmark Program offers an extremely cost-effective alternative to Rated shows. Yearly membership for The Benchmark Program costs $50, whereas membership fees for rated shows can run in excess of $175. Riders will be charged $35 for the first round, and only $25 for all additional rounds. Non-member fees at rallies are only $5 per class; at rated shows, non-members are charged an average of $70 per show. There are no late fees ($35 at rated shows) or nomination fees ($50 at rated shows) for The Benchmark Program rallies.

Today’s horse shows are, rightly, geared to the competitive level of horse and rider; The Benchmark Program seeks to provide an opportunity similar to those found in European countries to put the foundation on horses and riders at a cost more equivalent to theirs. Good mileage, reasonable cost, better marketing, individual goals, in an inclusive atmosphere – these are the goals of The Benchmark Program.

The light hearted Craig Cameron is one of the original equine clinicians. He is a native Texan, a life-long rancher, working cowboy and horse trainer. This genuine cowboy has done it all; from cow-calf stock operations to bull riding and hay-baling, even capturing wild cattle for fellow ranchers. He will be bringing his Extreme Cowboy Race to the Equine Affaire at the Fairplex in Pomona, California.

Craig, a ‘public defender of the horse,’ admires and dedicates himself to people who educate themselves first before educating their horses. Cameron started conducting western horsemanship clinics and demonstrations in order to impart his years of experience to horse enthusiasts and riders, thereby helping them understand their horses. He is good at influencing people to keep the better cowboy traditions alive! What earned Cameron huge followers worldwide is his philosophy of teaching that doesn’t permit rough handling of horses. It also seems he doesn’t want you taking yourself too seriously or losing your sense of humor either. His style of natural horsemanship is very inviting and down to earth.

This ‘Cowboy’s Clinician’ starts hundreds of horses every year, and also organizes four-day clinics at his ranches in Bluff Dale, Lincoln and Texas. He likes to bring together the real Cowboys and Cowgirls for his Extreme Competitions, a growingly popular race. The Craig Cameron “Extreme Cowboy Race” is a timed race. The obstacles in this race are designed to not only push horse and rider out of their traditional comfort zone, but also test the communication and horsemanship of each team in the running for true champion status. The Equine Affaire version of the race is always exciting action to watch.
