The use of stud chains while handing horses is a controversial topic. There are exceptions to every rule and set of circumstances in horse training. Ultimately it is necessary to train a horse on what is expected of him with the use of positive reinforcement. Horse Trainer and Clinician Charles Wilhelm gives us a great understanding on the long-term use of stud chains. .Ed.

If we really love and care for our horses as much as we say or think we do, why would we ever want to inflict pain on them? Stud chains are used on the nose, below the chin or across the gums. These areas are very delicate and sensitive.

Hand Feeding Horses by Charles Wilhelm

Feeding horses by hand is a pet peeve of mine and I want to talk about it in detail, giving the pros and cons and why I am against it.  In the horse industry there are a lot of people who hand feed their horses.  It is a way to have communication with the horse, a way of showing affection and a way of accommodating his needs.  It is a loving moment.  On the other hand, some horses begin to expect the treat and become pushy and aggressive, crowding into the person’s space.

     Crossing a Creek

    By Charles Wilhelm

When teaching a horse to go over any obstacle, including a creek, there are certain things that the horse must already understand and we must have control of the horse.  When we begin to teach a horse to go over any type of obstacle, we begin on the ground.  The horse must first know how to lunge and give to pressure.  On the ground and in the saddle, we must be able to control the hind quarters, the shoulders and the nose.  We begin with a simple object on the ground, like a pole.
